DRIVING OUT SNAKES with SAINT PATRICK
**
LAGAN LEGACY invited local community groups and individuals to a free celebration of St Patrick's Day on the River Lagan called "Driving out Snakes" on Saturday March 17th 2007
**
St. Patrick was famous for driving the snakes out of Ireland, but there are still some left! His ones hissed; today's snakes are more prejudiced. This unusual celebratory event is aimed at promoting good relations between the diverse communities in Belfast and driving out the snakes of racial and sectarian intolerance. It is hoped that sharing the joy of each other's cultural celebrations will broaden mutual understanding and promote social and cultural harmony.
The event was FREE to all participants and consisted of two boat trips around Belfast port and shipyard on the all weather touring boat MV Joyce Too. St Patrick was on board to deliver readings, poems, and stories about the real St Patrick. To a background of Irish traditional music and the Titanic's slipway this was a perfect way to celebrate the day. Free liquid refreshments were available.
Driving Out Snakes was sponsored
by Belfast City Council, Lagan Boat Company and the John Hewitt Bar & Restaurant
