MARITIME BELFAST
A silhouetted crane stands on Queen's Island as a lonely sentinel overlooking the last vestiges of a once world-famous shipyard. A shipyard where the legendary Titanic was designed, built and launched into the River Lagan. Titanic was only one of the thousands of ships to be built in Belfast... and Harland & Wolff only the last of the shipyards.
Shipbuilding was to bring Belfast a reputation for craftsmanship and innovation that was second to none. Often neglected in the shadow of the Titanic tragedy, Belfast's proud maritime history is one of the greatest stories never told.
Although Lagan Legacy sprang from a desire to preserve and protect Belfast's proud maritime heritage, it is clear that the mechanics of industry is only the hard physical face of our city's culture. Behind the successes and failures of industry and the day-to-day task of making an honest living, lies a whole social structure that supports the economic structure.... the joys and sadnesses, the hardships, the ambitions and politics, art, music and literature... together they make up our cultural heritage... and so, Lagan Legacy projects attempt to integrate these sometimes seemingly disparate elements by emphasising the social, artistic and educational aspects of our heritage as well as simply the economic and historical facts.
